Newton Abbot RFC

46 - 17

(HT 34-5)

Hucclecote RFC

Newton Abbot Ladies wasted no time in getting back to winning ways with an eight try to three victory over Hucclecote.

In their previous match, Newton suffered a rare set-back when losing 25-nil to St Mary’s Old Boys Ladies; however, this time round Newton played some great rugby to lead 34-5 at the break before the visitors put up stronger resistance in the second spell.

Newton went into the lead in the fifth minute; their half backs combined to make good ground before the forwards finished the move with a try from hooker Molly James.

The Gloucester based visitors hit back immediately with a try from centre Katrina Garland, but Newton were soon back in front, where they stayed for the duration.

The forwards did the hard graft, allowing scrum half Jess Veacock to finish off from short range.  Veacock was soon in action at the other end when putting in a try saving tackle.

A crunching tackle from Newton’s Zoe Lewis dislodged the ball in midfield, her centre partner Amparo Medina Faus swooped to pick up the pieces and run in from 40 metres for a self-converted try.

It was soon 22-5, Veacock and her back row worked the blindside of a scrum to set up camp on the Hucclecote line.  When a penalty was awarded, Veacock took a quick tap to score her second.

A loose kick out of defence by Hucclecote was snapped up by home full back Hayley Hopkins who needed no second chance to run to the line for a try which Medina Faus converted.

The kicker was soon in the action again, she latched on to turnover ball 40 metres out, deftly chipped ahead and won the race to touchdown to give her side a comfortable lead at the turn.

Within two minutes of the resumption, Hopkins went in for a second after quick hands through the threes gave her enough space out wide.

At this stage, a runaway score looked likely, but Hucclecote dug deep and responded with a couple of tries, one converted, to get back to 39-17.

Any hopes of an unlikely comeback were dashed when home No. 8 Claire Hooper powered over the line for Newton’s eighth and concluding try.

Victory lifted Newton from third to second with 19 points behind unbeaten St Mary’s Old Boys Ladies, who have 28 points.

Newton’s Ladies next game is at Chew on Sunday.
