Newton Abbot “All Whites” recorded only their second win of the season when dominating the basement battle against Old Patesians, who remain winless after promotion at the end of last term.
The visitors, who won their opening match and have picked up a clutch of bonus points in their subsequent losses, put together one of their best performances for a while. Four tries – which earned another bonus point – alongside 18 points from the boot of Tom Putt, who bossed the show from fly-half, were enough to move Newton up a place, but still in the relegation zone.
Newton’s pack look a stronger outfit with Martin Harrison-Browne and Jarryd Harris back in the selection mix. The former, who made a belated start to the campaign, scored two first half tries to help his side to a 22-3 lead, and Harris, back at No. 8 after limping out of the Exmouth loss after only 10 minutes, scored Newton’s bonus point try in the last quarter.
Winger Jack Bond – also back in the side – linked with centre Felipe Perica to put the other winger Kevin Dennis over for Newton’s third first half score.
Putt kicked the rest of the points, via three conversions, three penalties and a well taken drop goal when the referee played penalty advantage.
Although this victory was over a luckless Old Pats side, it gives the “All Whites” a much needed fillip ahead of a tough run of matches against the three “B”s.
And it doesn’t get much tougher than the top two in consecutive weeks. Saturday, Newton take on visiting Barnstaple (k.o.2.00pm) who are in second, before travelling to Dorset to face unbeaten leaders Bournemouth. This challenging duo are followed by Brixham’s visit to Rackerhayes, which marks the start of the second half of the campaign.
